Thanks to those of you who replied to our question about hydrangea drying. Here’s what we heard — 3 slightly different approaches.
Donna H. has found that the best dried blooms are those that self dry on the bush. “I cut the ones that have turned color and are dry to somewhat dry, cut and keep in a cool not bright sunshine area until completely dried.”
Jerry E. and Leslie J. had very similar approaches.
Pick them in the early morning, leaving about 10 inches of stem, stick them in one inch of water, put in shade or cool room, don’t let the blossoms touch so you need a large vessel. When water is gone they are ready for their drying container.
Cynde R. dries her hydrangeas in the attic in the barn. “They dry best hung upside down in dry, hot and dark conditions. Darkness keeps them from fading.”

So many of us have commented about how beautiful the amaryllis have been this year. What do to as the blooms pass? Cynde R. tells us to keep watering when leaves appear and keep alive until late summer or leaves start to die back. Then let rest for few months in cool darkness. Just like all bulbs the leaves replenish nutrients so it can rebloom.

Several of us attended a workshop on using milk bottles to winter sow native plant seeds. It was put on by the great ladies from Blue Stem Native Plant Nursery in Norwell. I've got 10 bottles started ... we'll see what happens. I got most of my seeds from Blue Stem, but also gathered some locally. The PDFs below are great directions about how to do this.
