Drying Hydrangeas

Approaches to drying hydrangeas

Thanks to those of you who replied to our question about hydrangea drying. Here’s what we heard — 3 slightly different approaches.

Donna H. has found that the best dried blooms are those that self dry on the bush. “I cut the ones that have turned color and are dry to somewhat dry, cut and keep in a cool not bright sunshine area until completely dried.”

Jerry E. and Leslie J. had very similar approaches.

Pick them in the early morning, leaving about 10 inches of stem, stick them in one inch of water, put in shade or cool room, don’t let the blossoms touch so you need a large vessel. When water is gone they are ready for their drying container.

Cynde R. dries her hydrangeas in the attic in the barn. “They dry best hung upside down in dry, hot and dark conditions. Darkness keeps them from fading.”
