Red Maple Seedlings
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS
Download printable instructions here
Where to plant: Red Maples can be planted in full sun to part sun/shade. They will reach heights of 40-60 feet with 30-50 foot spread eventually, but expect 10-20 feet in the first 5 to 10 years (1 to 2 feet of growth per year.) They tolerate a wide variety of soil types. Consider calling 811 to determine if there are any underground lines where you want to plant. For more info: Learn About Red Maple - Arbor Day Foundation
How to plant:
-
Soak the roots of the seedling in water for 3-6 hours to remove the hydrating gel.
-
Dig a hole as wide and deep as the roots spread out. Remove grass in a 3 foot diameter circle around the center of your hole. Turning the soil in this area will help your seedling grow.
-
Put your tree in the center of the hole, with the root collar even with the ground. The root collar is where the uppermost roots grow out of the trunk.
-
Pack your soil firmly around the tree. Mix in some compost if available, but don’t use potting soil, fertilizer or chemicals! These can harm a young tree.
-
Make a small berm at the edge of your 3 foot circle to keep water from running away from the tree. Water well.
-
Add 2-4 inches of mulch in your circle, although keep the mulch from touching the tree trunk.
-
Keep the soil and mulch around the tree moist but not soggy in the first few years. You may need to water every 7-10 days during dry spells.
-
If you live in an area with deer or rabbits, consider putting a fence around and above your seedling for a few years to protect it. A cylinder of chicken wire with a lid of chicken wire will work.
